Synopsis
This article explores the value of going to University in the light of increasing student fees which now rise to £3,000 a year. It comments on the fact that UCAS reported a 3.5% decrease in applications for 2006. Good news however showed that applications for some science and engineering subject rose and foundation degrees rose by 21.5%.
So what are the positive reasons to consider University?
- Graduates earn more than 50% more than non-graduates according to research.
- Average starting salary is £23,011 and employment rates are lower for graduates than non-graduates.
- The experience offers you opportunities that would not otherwise be possible.
The article focuses on the need however for prospective students to be mindful of the outcome of the course as well as the journey. Tips to ensure this include
- Checking out the individual aspects of the course carefully as they can differ in emphasis at different institutions. Check out course details on www.ucas.com.
- Seek advice from qualified careers advisers to make sure you are right for a particular course. Make sure you are applying for a course at the points level you are likely to achieve.
- Research employment success rates of graduates on your favoured course. University course departments and careers services have this information. General information for graduate outcomes per subject can be found on www.prospects.ac.uk.
- Consider getting additional employability skills in a gap year. Recent research this year by KT Associates found that graduates would be more employable with increased work related skills. Gap years for certain subjects should always be checked first as for some courses deferred entry is not seen favourably.
Conclusion – yes it is a foundation for life if well chosen. If you are venturing into higher education to do so with as much knowledge, research and professional advice as you can get to make it your gain.
